It is mid-April, and we need warm blankets and jackets for the early morning and evening game drives. Daytime temperatures can still reach mid 20’s Celsius, but as soon as the sun drops below the horizon in the evening, one can feel that winter is fast approaching.
The Barn Swallows and European Bee-eaters are fattened and energized from the spoils of summer, and they are gathering in their respective departure lounges for their long-haul flight north.
Although it is always sad to see the end of summer, we do love winter in the bush. It is a great time to be on safari! Izingwe is in a summer rainfall area, so the bush dries out during the winter months, and the foliage thins allowing for better visibility of game in some areas. Animals often congregate around water holes as there are no other sources of water during the drier, winter months.
At Izingwe, we make sure that the game drive blankets are thick and warm, and our guests are always thrilled to be provided with hot water bottles to cuddle with on game drive. We also have a “mudroom” full of thick warm jackets, gloves and beanies for guests to use during their stay at Izingwe.
Another enjoyable aspect of winter is returning to the lodge after game drive and sitting by the open, wood fireplace in the main lodge or bar area. Each guest room also has a fireplace, and our amazing staff ensure that the fire is lit before you return from dinner to your room.
So, if you are thinking about booking a winter safari…. Give us a call, we can highly recommend it!
